MWYO Corporate Internship Initiative 2.0
Written by : David Lai, Nancy Chan, Emily Lo
Introduction
In the summer of 2020, MWYO organised an internship programme for secondary school students. Based on observations from the programme, we published a research report titled “The Importance of Internship for Secondary School Students: Review and Recommendations”. For secondary students, a well-planned and well-executed internship programme can offer a valuable opportunity for career and life planning. We found that even students with average academic results are capable of developing excellent soft skills in the workplace. We have also devised a set of guidelines on how to design and implement an internship programme which allows students to perform and learn effectively in the workplace.
In 2021, we organised “MWYO Corporate Internship Initiative 2.0”, putting our guidelines into practice and recording the implementation process. In addition to secondary students, Vocational and Professional Education and Training students also took part in the programme, displaying outstanding work-related soft skills and proving to their employers and the public that they deserve a wider range of job opportunities. We hope that our experience may provide useful insight for other organisations to design effective internship programmes in the future.
