I have been criticized and have even gotten personal attacks for singing, in school and online. At that time, I felt depressed. I did not understand why they mistreated me when I did not hurt anyone. Luckily, my teacher encouraged me and still gave me opportunities to perform. I enjoy performing – it felt happy to be on stage every time and it did not matter to me what people thought. This is why I continued.


Each young person is unique. They have different stories and aspirations, but they all have one thing in common – they need recognition and support from people around them. When faced with criticisms and attacks, young people may feel lost and thrown off track. How do we help them navigate this world that is at times harsh? Have we done enough to support them in dealing with judgments and negative emotions?
